What do we want from our educational institutions?

  1. Democratic citizens
  2. Creative scientists
  3. Innovative entrepreneurs
  4. Entertainment

The answer appears to be 4.

Some may have thought it was financial wizards, but after the 2008 economic crisis, that seems to have lost its glamour.  Earlier this week, the Pac-12 agreed to a TV deal that will give the schools $3 billion over the next twelve years by selling its football and basketball games to Fox and ESPN.  Think about that.

In California at least, high school students are being turned away. Faculty take pension cuts.  Students find fewer classes offered.   And the list goes on.  At the same time, millions comes to schools for sport programs.

So why is Fox and ESPN paying 3 billion dollars to Universities?  They assume that corporations will buy time during the programs for commercials.  The money is coming from corporations.  College sports, in other words, are becoming another form of corporate sponsored entertainment.

If we want entertainment from our institutions of higher education, then it seems we are getting what we want.
